What is FEES

  • FEES stands for flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), sometimes referred to as fiber-optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. It is a procedure designed to assess swallowing function through the use of a flexible nasopharyngoscope, which offers visualization and imaging to examine the pharyngeal and laryngeal structures. The endoscopic assessment can be a valuable addition to the evaluation and treatment of the pharyngeal swallow. This procedure allows a trained and skilled speech language pathologist to evaluate the swallowing impairment as well as appraise the effects of swallowing treatment.

  • PennScope uses state of the art medical equipment and software for the procedure of flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. A flexible endoscope is introduced trans-nasally and advanced to view the pharyngeal and laryngeal structures and their functions. A small amount of green food coloring is added to various food consistencies. The SLP evaluates swallowing function and presence or absence of penetration/aspiration. Compensatory strategies can be assessed in during the study without time constraints, since there is no exposure to radiation. Upon completion of the FEES, the SLP can provide recommendations for safest diet level, compensatory strategies, and treatment plan.
